BL,

I think we will know more once the IRS makes a determination. Because this will affect 2010 taxes there is some time for the IRS to work this out.

JF,

Alternative Minimum Tax is a separately figured tax that eliminates many deductions and credits, thus increasing tax liability for an individual who would otherwise pay less tax. AMT was enacted through the Tax Reform Act of 1969, and has been a controversial tax ever since and it has no effective expiration. Each year Congress passes an AMT Patch which allows an exemption to be applied to the tax so that taxpayers who fall into this category may have some relief, but this patch is only set to apply for one year. This year the American Recovery and Reinvestment Tax Act of 2009 extended the patch until 12/31/2009, but will need to be passed again next year to allow for the exemption so if for some reason they do not there will be increased tax for these individuals and corporations. So each year the Individuals and Corporations sit waiting in limbo until congress passes the patch which in some cases is not done until very close to tax season.
